Here at Sheen Dental we’ve been successfully fitting dental implants in Richmond for many years. As a result we know that for many people, the thought of undergoing the procedure can be quite a daunting prospect. So we thought we’d put together a list of frequently asked questions that will put a person’s mind at ease.
What exactly is a dental implant?
In essence a dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is placed into the jaw. It consists of three parts and they are…
The implant itself – A small screw-like metal post which is usually made from titanium which is fastened to the jaw-bone.
Abutment – A small extension piece which is fitted onto the implant
Crown – An artificial tooth often made of porcelain which sits on top of the abutment.
They are a more permanent solution for restoring bad, broken or missing teeth and as a result are becoming more and more popular.
Is the surgical procedure painful?
As with any surgical procedure, patients may experience some slight pain immediately after the event. However more often than not, the pain only lasts for a few days and can be relieved by taking an Aspirin or Paracetamol. During the actual procedure itself, patients should expect to feel no pain at all. Here at Sheen Dental we also use the latest in conscious sedation techniques.
Am I a good candidate for dental implants?
Whether you’re looking for a dental implant in Richmond or anywhere else in the country the criteria is generally always the same. As long as you’re in good health and practice good oral hygiene, then there is no reason why you can’t have dental implants. People who drink and smoke heavily, have suffered some types of cancer, have uncontrollable diabetes or have previously had radiation treatment around the jaw-line, might have incurred problems which impair bone healing. Therefore in these circumstances every case should be looked at individually.
Is there an age limit for dental implants?
In essence no. As long as you are fit and healthy (as in the criteria listed above) then there is no age limit. In fact, dental implants have been particularly successful in older people and have been known to lead to an improved quality of life.
What are the steps involved in getting a dental implant?
This is really a three step process as follows….
Osseointegration – An oral surgeon, general dentist or peridontist will perform the process of placing the implant/s into your jaw. Gradually the bone begins to fuse around the implant and they become one. This process is known as osseointegration. Whilst this is taking place, your dentist may provide you with an temporary crown which can be placed on top of the implant.
Fixing the abutment – Once osseointegration has taken place and the implant feels secure, the next stage is to have the abutment fitted. This is a small extension piece that sits on top of the implant above the jaw line
Fitting the prosthetic tooth – Finally when the abutment has been fitted firmly in place then the prosthetic tooth or crown is attached to the abutment.
The whole process can take anywhere from 3-9 months depending upon how quickly your bone heals and starts to re-grow.
Here at Sheen Dental we have a team of highly skilled professionals who will go through the process with you.
