There is a growing demand for dental implants in Richmond, London and elsewhere in the UK and as a result there are more and more manufacturers of dental implants. If you’ve been researching makes of dental implants then you could probably name about half a dozen or so, but in reality there are over 150 different brands to choose from. The majority of dental implants are made from titanium but vary in shape, fitting, and naturally, price. Dental clinics all have their own brand of preference, but at the end of the day does the choice of brand have any bearing on the success of the implants and on their durability?
Who are the manufacturers?
Some of the more popular dental implant brands include Nobel Biocare, Straumann, Biomet 3i, Zimmer Dental, Bicon and All-0n-Four.
What are the main differences?
As mentioned above every dental clinic will have its own favourite brand, and the reasons behind their choice will be explained to you during your consultation, but will mainly focus on factors such as ease of use, bio-compatibility, and design.
Ease of use – Whether you are having dental implants in Richmond, or in Harley Street, any dental clinic will tell you that some brands are simply easier to fit. Take the Bicon implant, for instance. It has a unique locking taper implant to abutment connection which allows for a 360 degree universal abutment positioning which is also clinically sealed to prevent bacteria forming. They are tapped into place instead of being screwed which makes them easier to use than some other makes.
Biocompatibility – A crucial factor of the dental implant procedure is the process known as osseointegration where the surrounding bone fuses with the implant. Some types of implants are better able to fuse with the bone than others. The Biomet 3i for example uses a micro textured surface which gives the new bone something to grip on to and speeds up the osseointegration process.
Design – Most dental implants are made from titanium but some manufacturers are starting to use zirconia which works in a similar fashion to titanium but has an aesthetic advantage in that it is white in colour.
Does this matter?
Although dental implant brands vary from one manufacturer to another, and most dentists would agree that it is important to make the right choice of dental implant for each patient, ultimately the consensus of opinion is that the success of an implant is 5% choice of implant and 95% skill of the surgeon.
